Your theory makes sense to me! But mainly what I love about this is that it sounds as if the people who thought there wasn't much evidence just weren't paying attention properly, and you WERE \o/
There's another possible castle site in Inverness. Marked on the 1st OS map as "supposed site of Macbeth's Castle' (now Victorian streets including Auldcastle Road) where there is a high mound (motte???) on Millburn Road behind the Farm & Household shop. https://canmore.org.uk/site/13436/macbeths-castle. A little further from the river than the 'proper' Inverness Castle though and probably no remaining evidence either way...
